Vienna will showcase works of a lifetime

A complete retrospective of films by cine craftsman Satyajit Ray, the only Indian filmmaker to get an Oscar for lifetime contribution, is to be held at the Vienna International Film Festival next month.
According to noted critic Devendra Kumar who has been specially invited to attend the screenings, this is the first time that all films made by Satyajit Ray during his lifetime will be screened in a festival in Europe. The Vienna International Film Festival, which will commence from October 15, has in previous years held retrospectives of filmmakers like Roberto Rossellini and Jean Luc Godard.
Meanwhile, over 40 documentaries and five short films-most of them from India are to be screened at the biennial Film South Asia ‘99 to be held in Kathmandu from September 30. The four-day competitive fete is organised by the Kathmandubased Himal Association and the South Asian journal Himal.
According to festival director and editor of ‘Himal Kanak, Mani Dixit, a three-member jury headed by the internationally renowned Gautam Ghose with Pakistani theatre and cine personality Salman Shahid and Sri Lankan academic commentator Niloufer De Mel will judge the films Three outstanding films will be awarded citations and cash prizes of $2000, $1000 and $500 in order of merit.
