Benegal’s ‘Samar’ bags best film award

Godmother, the controversial Hindi film, today bagged six awards, including the best actress award for Shabana Azmi. Popular Hindi actor Ajay Devgan and Malayalam superstar Mammooty shared the best actor award for their films Zakhm and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar respective ly.

The best film award went to Shyam Benegal’s Samar.

The 46th National Film Awards were announced by Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pramod Mahajan here today.

Rajeevnath got the best director award for the Malayalam film Janani. Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai won the award for the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment. Alka Yagnik won the best female playback singer award for the title song of the same film.

The best non-feature film award went to Sanjay Kak’s In the Forest Hangs a Bridge (English). Rajeev Raj’s Repentance (Malayalam) won the award in the category of best first non-feature film.

Mahesh Bhatt’s Zakhm won the Nargis Dutt award for the best film on national integration.

Mr Mahajan said that 114 feature films. 105 non-feature films, 22 books and articles by 17 film critics had been entered for the awards.

Javed Akhtar, poet lyricist, won his third best lyricist award and Sanjiv Abhayankar the best male playback singer award for Vinay Shukla’s Godmother.

The film also won the best music director’s award (Vishal Bhardwaj), best editing (Renu Saluja) and the best Hindi film award.

Manoj Bajpai, won the best supporting actor award, for his portrayal of underworld don Bhikhu Mhatre in Satya.

The best supporting actress award went to Suhasini Mulay for her role as corrupt chief minister in Guizar’s Hu Tu Tu.

The best cinematographer’s award went to virtuoso Santosh Sivan for Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se.

Malli,the Tamil film directed by Sivan, won the best film award in the environment/conservation/preservation category.

The best child artiste award went to Baby Amma (Shwetha) for Malli. A special jury award was given to director Ashok Viswanathan for his Bengali film Kitchhu Sanlap Kitchhu Pralap.
