Talk by Dwight Friesen
It is well known that a Western movie of Jesus' life inspired the birth of the Indian cinema industry, yet few Indian producers have attempted to portray his life on the silver screen. One major exception is 'Karunamayudu' (Telugu; 1978), a movie that may well be India's best-known Christ film. This paper will provide a synopsis of the film, and a brief review of its production and distribution history, followed by a brief discussion of one of its more prominent cinematic conventions - the use of extreme close-ups of Jesus' eyes.
