BUILDING A KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY
A Consultation hosted by
Higher Education Cell-Centre for the Study of Culture and Society
Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore
October 1-2, 2010
Higher Education in India has emerged as a very important area of public and private interest as also investment. This is coupled with new opportunities and challenges in Higher Education with the sector poised to make a huge leap in terms of quantity and scope of services offered. A series of unprecedented reforms of the sector are also underway.
The consultation is intended to undertake a critical overview of Higher Education policies and trends in relation to the current challenges and opportunities in the sector; and suggest the contours of scalable models (for institutional design as well as knowledge production, and focussing on governance, financing, evaluation and assessment mechanisms, curriculum design, research programme design). Based on the recommendations of the consultations and the planned interviews with key sector experts, IIMB and the Higher Education Cell will prepare a Strategy Paper focusing on the effective implementation of Higher Education reforms. The primary addressees of the Strategy Paper will be policy-makers in government agencies, policy implementers, institutional decision-makers, national and international philanthropic organisations. The consultations are designed to produce an independent analysis and evaluation of the ongoing Higher Education reforms in India and to suggest scalable reform models.
We hope that the comprehensive review and recommendations of the consultation will provide the basis for a road-map for the implementation of innovative practices in higher education. This exercise is intended to enhance coordination between different stakeholder bodies in higher education, and generate national-level consensus on priorities for higher education reform.
